The Dauntless was one of only 14 ships out of 112 that survived the assault. In early 2374, the Dauntless, along with the rest of Seventh Fleet, launched a counterassault against the Jem'Hadar attack in the Tyra system. During the Dominion War, the Dauntless and the Seventh Fleet fought in many battles, including the battles for Deep Space 9, Goralis, and the final assault on Cardassia Prime. By 2372, Captain Bell retired, and Captain Robert Wright assumed command of the ship. In 2372, the Dauntless returned to spacedock for refits and upgrades.
During the unsettled period that followed, the ship was assigned numerous scouting and reconnaissance missions that earned her the name "The Seeing Eye". The Dauntless received her first unit citation when it defended a disputed area against a flight of Romulan Warbirds and held the area long enough for Starfleet reinforcement to arrive. Her early missions were mainly routine often called "milk runs". In 2365, the Dauntless was made the flagship of the Seventh Fleet. Captain Leland Bell took command of the ship on stardate 42462.1. On stardate 42339.5, the Dauntless was commissioned.įinal systems completion and shakedown was conducted at Earth Station McKinley. On stardate 42073.1, in the year 2365, the Dauntless was launched from Mars. Skavak killed Wise and disposed of Wise's body in the plasma stream leaving a telepathic imprint in the bulkhead that was not discovered until 2387. Wise confronted Skavak in the nacelle tube.
A member of the construction team, Allan Wise, discovered that a Vulcan officer named Skavak, was really a Romulan spy sent to steal information on the new Galaxy-class starships. The ship's port nacelle tube was the site of a murder while it was still under construction at Utopia Planitia. Doctor Leah Brahams was responsible for much of the Dauntless' warp propulsion system design. Construction was supervised by Commander Norrington. The construction was a massive undertaking, involving thousands of people across disciplines. The Dauntless was built at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards orbiting Mars in the Sol System.
